Welcome to "Sustaining Penn's Woods" Online Curriculum

This online version of the curriculum is intended for teachers and educators for use in their classrooms. It is a full version of the written section of the curriculum kit. Use the tabs above to explore and download each section of the curriculum.

Here's why this curriculum is so important to educators!

  • High Level of Interest - Forestland covers nearly 60% of Pennsylvania (PA), while farmland covers only about 24% and developed land covers about 15%.
  • Wood: Important Resource - We use wood and wood products every day, from building our homes to brushing our teeth. In fact, every year the average American uses the equivalent of a 100-foot-tall tree.
  • PA Specific Information - People often have more access to information on the rain forests than they do to information on PA forests. The curriculum answers the request from PA's teachers for state-specific information.
  • Improve Knowledge - Each chapter of the curriculum lists the relevant environmental and ecology standards to which it applies.
  • Responsibility - The goal of the curriculum is to get students involved with environmental issues by educating them about their forests and environment.
This kit contains 5 components
This kit was funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Education's Office of Environment and Ecology (This Office is funded by both the Department of Education and the Department of Environmental Protection), the Department of Agriculture's Hardwoods Development Council, and the Hardwood Lumber Manufacturers Association of Pennsylvania. It is the result of collaborative efforts among educators and resource personnel throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
