Human Influence on Pennsylvania's Forests: Then and Now

This section provides background information and hands-on, interdisciplinaryactivities in four areas. Students learn how the Native Americans depended on the forest for food, water and resources and how their culture evolved over time. As the New World was settled, the American pioneers needed to rely on the fores for their own survival. We will look at how these two historical groups affected Pennsylvania's forestlands. Many people and events have shaped our move toward conservation and stewardship. Students will learn about some of the main players in Pennsylvania's history. Finally, students have an opportunity to make decisions on the development of a piece of land. They will see how their decisions impact the community both environmentally and economically.
