This section provides background information and hands-on, interdisciplinary
activities in 11 areas. Students will study the different types
of forests in Pennsylvania and the diversity of plants and animals
that live in them. The students will complete a forest inventory to
identify the biological and structural diversity within this microhabitat.
Abiotic and biotic factors will be explored to determine the characteristics
of the forested land. All of the components of the forest will be
brought together so students can start to understand how competition
in a forest is a natural process. Students will discuss the
white-tail deer and how they have been managed in Pennsylvania.
Students will learn about invasive plants, pests and diseases
and how they affect the health of the forests and the management practices
established to control their spread and the destruction they cause.
Students will explore biological diversity by investigating
the characteristics of a wetland and its importance to wildlife and
humans. The forest ecosystem is continuously changing. These
changes can be natural occurrences or human-induced disturbances.
Students will learn about human actions that create change and natural
occurrences (fire) that induce changes. Finally, we look at
who really owns Pennsylvania's forest and how the forests are
used.
